Can Magic Haze conjure up a repeat performance

1:25 – Southwell – BOOK TICKETS AT SOUTHWELL-RACECOURSE.CO.UK HANDICAP (CLASS 6) (4yo+ 0-65) Standard 1m4f

Last January Magic Haze was turned out at Southwell over 1 mile 4 furlongs in a Class 6 Handicap after being off since June and finished 2nd to Dontpaytheferryman who was in the middle of running up a four-timer (including a hat-trick at Southwell).  Magic Haze then came back to Southwell 10 days later and won over today’s trip.

There does not appear to be anything of the calibre of Dontpaytheferryman in today’s race and Magic Haze is following a similar path to last year.  He last ran on the flat at Redcar on 6 August and he has had a spin over hurdles at Sedgefield in September, but he has been off since then.  He runs over 1 mile 4 furlongs again today and given that his yard can obviously get him ready to run after a lay-off fitness should not be an issue.

He has run at Southwell on the fibresand track 8 times.  He has won twice and finished 2nd or 3rd on four more occasions.  Over this trip at Southwell he has won once and finished 2nd once from three starts.  He has won twice in his career and both wins have come at Southwell on the fibresand surface.

He is ridden by Ryan Powell today and Ryan has ridden him once before which was in his comeback race last January when he was 2nd to Dontpaytheferryman.

He won off an Official rating of 56 over course and distance last January and he runs off 59 today, which on the face of it is 3lb higher than his highest winning mark.  However, Ryan Powell takes 5lbs off today so in effect he is 2lb below his career best.  He has also won off 55 at Southwell for his only other career win.

As his record shows he saves his best efforts for Southwell and he has also shown that he goes well fresh.  He will also get some good assistance from a decent claiming jockey in the shape of Ryan Powell who is riding well at the moment with 5 winners and 5 placed rides from 26 starts over the last 14 days.
