Big Wave makes handicap debut off reasonable mark

2:40 – Lingfield – TOTEQUICKPICK FILLIES´ HANDICAP (CLASS 5) (4yo+ 0-70) Winner £2,386 Standard 6f

Jane Chapple-Hyam has not has many runners in the past few weeks but three of her last ten runners have won and she will be looking to Big Wave to increase her strike rate by winning on her handicap debut.

The 4 year old bay filly is by far the most unexposed runner in the field and is making only her fourth career start today.  She only made her racecourse debut back in February when she ran over 1 mile 1 furlong at Wolverhampton where she finished 4th.  She was dropped down in trip for her second start when she ran over 6 furlongs at Kempton on what was her debut for her new trainer.  Big Wave ran really well and lead for most of the way only being headed inside the final 100 yards, finishing 3rd by 1 ¾ lengths.  She run a little green but did show some ability.

Her latest run last month was again over 6 furlongs on her turf debut at Yarmouth.  She took a very keen hold for the first couple of furlongs and was up with the leader until 2 furlongs out when she was shaken up.  She showed a decent turn of foot inside the final furlong and ran on well to win by 1 ¾ lengths.

She runs over 6 furlongs again today and has been found a decent opportunity in a mares and fillies only race for her handicap debut.  She has been given an opening handicap mark of 64 which looks reasonable on what she has achieved so far.  She is ridden by Richard Hughes who rode 2 winners yesterday on his second day back after his 50 day ban.  It looks a very good jockey booking for Big Wave as he has a very light touch in the saddle which will hopefully help her to settle.

After just three runs Big Wave still has improvement in her and with her yard and jockey both going well she could well make a winning handicap debut.  She appears to have plenty of stamina for the trip as illustrated by her decent debut run over 9 furlongs and the fact that although she pulled very hard at Yarmouth she still had enough in the tank to win.
