Mad Jazz will not mind softer ground

The going at Redcar is currently described as Good but with more heavy rain forecast for the North East the going could well have deteriorated come race time.  Mad Jazz was of interest in the opener in any case, but with rain forecast the case for backing her to win is strengthened.

The 2 year old bay filly has had four runs to date and did not make a particularly good start to her career at Redcar back in April.  She was sent off as favourite but finished last of the 6 runners when she swerved violently right out of the stalls.  She made her second start at Musselburgh a week later and faired slightly better when she finished 2nd of 4 runners although she was 5 lengths behind the winner.

She next ran at Catterick at the end of April and won a seven runner Seller by virtually making all to win by 1 length.  Interestingly she was retained by her connections for 4,200 guineas in the post race auction.  Her last run was in a more valuable sales race at York when she was tried over 6 furlongs for the first time.  She finished 4th after hitting a flat spot in the race before running on again in the final furlong, hinting that she will probably get further.

She runs over 7 furlongs for the first time today and to back up the evidence of her last race, she has plenty of form on both sides of her pedigree to suggest she will have the stamina to see out the 7 furlongs well enough.

She has run three times on Good to Soft and Soft ground and on each occasion she has acted well in the going.  She also has the added bonus of Shane B Kelly riding today as he is able to take 5lbs off her weight which will be a good asset with cut in the ground.

Mad Jazz ran a cracking race to finish 4th in soft ground over 6 furlongs at York last week and she looks to have been well placed for her first try down in class over a longer trip today.  The in form Tiger Sunset looks likely to be her main challenger but his best form so far has come in Good to Firm ground and he has to give Mad Jazz a massive 7lbs this afternoon, which could be the difference.
