Tevez still on a winning mark

3:20 – Redcar – H JARVIS 134TH ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP (CLASS 3) (4yo+ 0-90) Soft 7f

Of the remaining seven runners in the 3:20 race at Redcar only Tevez and Dubai Hills have any significant form in Soft going and of the two only Tevez has won over the trip on turf.  The 7 year old bay gelding has run four times on the turf so far this season and is yet to register a win.  However, even though he is up in class from his last run which was a very decent effort in Soft ground at Folkestone 12 days ago the conditions would appear to suit him best today.

Tevez has run on the flat turf 24 times and has won three times and been placed on 7 other occasions.  He has run in Soft ground three times, winning once and being placed on both of his other two runs.  His latest placed effort at Folkestone was somewhat unlucky as although he ran on really well, he did so from the widest position and was still able to get within 1 ¼ lengths of the winner.

He has run over 7 furlongs 13 times on the turf flat and has won twice and been placed second or third on five other occasions.  All three of his Soft ground runs have come over today’s trip.

He is ridden by Justin Newman this afternoon who is an extremely capable apprentice jockey who takes 5lbs off Tevez.  Justin has ridden at Redcar on 11 occasions to date and has won 4 times.

Tevez runs off an Official Rating of 81 today.  He has won off this mark before over 7 furlongs at Leicester last July.  Although he is up in class and has never won in Class 3 before he is proven in the ground and goes well at the trip.  The deciding factor in the soft ground could well be the fact that his decent apprentice jockey takes a further 5lbs off his back today, which in effect means he is running off just 76.  Given his weight advantage and question marks about most of the field in the ground, Tevez could well register his first win in Class 3 today.
