Sovereign Debt will enjoy the conditions at Newmarket

4:05 – Newmarket (July) – PORTLAND PLACE PROPERTIES CONDITIONS STAKES (CLASS 3) (3yo) Good To Soft 1m

Sovereign Debt who has won in both Soft and Good ground should find conditions to suit at Newmarket this afternoon.  The 3 year old brown colt has an improving profile and as this is just his 2nd start over 1 mile there should be plenty more to come from him over this distance.

Sovereign Debt ran five times as a 2 year old over distances of 6 furlongs and 7 furlongs and won twice.  He made his seasonal reappearance at Doncaster on 28 April which was his only run to date over 1 mile.  He saw out the trip well to finish 2nd by 1 length and was keeping on inside the last furlong.  He has run twice more since with both runs coming at Ascot.  He won a Class 2 Handicap over 7 furlongs on his penultimate start in very easy fashion.  He was held near the rear until making steady headway 2 furlongs out.  He went to the front over 1 furlong out and soon quickened to go clear for a very easy win by 3 ½ lengths in Soft ground.  His last run, at the Royal meeting was his first run in Group company and although he finished 9th he was only 3 lengths behind the winner.  He was put into the race 2 furlongs out and was running on strongly only to be impeded twice and subsequently eased down towards the finish.

The Good to Soft ground should be ideal today.  Sovereign Debt has run in Soft ground on two occasions, winning once and finishing 2nd on the other occasion.  He has also run in Good ground five times, winning on two occasions.  He is ridden by Jamie Spencer and Jamie has ridden him four times previously, winning twice.

He runs in a much smaller field than he encountered at Ascot last time with just nine runners taking to the track.  He takes on a seriously classy field today but he does have ground conditions in his favour and Jamie Spencer will no doubt get him switched off at the back of the field.  He has an excellent turn of foot and off bottom weight he really should be reeling in the leading horses inside the final furlong today.  He is still improving and if he can show the form of his last two races he must have a very decent chance today.
