Big Wave can continue to improve

7:30 – Newcastle – TSG.COM SUPPORTING CHUF EBF FILLIES´ HANDICAP (CLASS 5) (3yo+ 0-75) Good To Soft 6f

Big Wave runs for just the ninth time in her career this evening at Newcastle and this 4 year old bay filly still looks open to improvement.  She won on her last start at Yarmouth for which the handicapper put her up 5lbs but there are reasons to believe that although she runs in a tougher race this evening, she still has an excellent chance of showing further improvement.

She did not make her racecourse debut until this year when she ran four times for Jane Chapple-Hyam, winning her Maiden on her second start, before moving to Alison Hutchinson in June.  She won on her first start for her new yard at Nottingham despite the fact that she was very keen and expended unnecessary energy early in the race.  She demonstrated the same trait in her next run at Brighton and to some extent at Folkestone although both runs came over 5 furlongs and she appears to be much better over 6 furlongs.

Her last run at Yarmouth saw her settle much better and her jockey was able to have her up with the pace and have enough in reserve to go to the front inside the final furlong and the filly had enough left in the tank to battle on well to win by a head.  The fact that she is now settling better in her races coupled with her progressive profile gives her a much better chance of continuing to improve.

She runs over 6 furlongs tonight which looks to be her optimum trip as on the three occasions she has run over the distance on turf she has won every time.  The going at Newcastle is Good to Soft and she has won on her only start in the going.  She also runs over a straight course this evening and on the four times she has done so before, she has won three times.

This is Big Waves most difficult assignment to date, but she showed in her last race that she has learned to settle better and she is unbeaten from three starts over the trip on turf.  The two last time out winners at the top of the handicap look dangerous, but like Big Wave they are also racing off higher handicap marks this evening and given the tenacity and battling quality she showed last time to stay in front she does appeal as an each way bet at her current price of 9/1.
