4:20 – Exeter – CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ATHLETES HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 4) (4yo+ 0-115) Soft 2m3f
Cadoudalas returns to action this afternoon after a break of 165 days. The 9 year old bay gelding ran over fences on his last run but is back over hurdles again today. As eight of his last ten runs have been over fences during which time he has won three times and been placed once, it is possible that he is running in a hurdle race as a warm up before resuming his chasing career. However, he is running off such an attractive hurdles rating that he could easily run into a place at a decent price.
Cadoudalas finished 2nd in a Class 3 Handicap Chase on his last run in April off a mark of 132 but only has a Hurdling mark of 109 for today’s race. Considering that he has won of a mark as high as 128 over fences and he has been placed off 112 over hurdles he is definitely worth a second look off his current handicap mark.
He has run over hurdles a total of nine times and has won once and been placed five times giving a combined win and place strike rate of 66.6%. Although he only has the one hurdles win to his name, conditions look ideal for a big effort today. The going at Exeter as of 6:45 this morning is Soft and Cadoudalas has run in Soft ground 8 times, winning once and finishing 2nd on four further occasions. He is fairly versatile regarding the trip, winning over distances between 2 miles and 2 miles 4 furlongs so the 2 miles 3 furlongs he takes on today should be fine.
He also has the benefit of Robert Thornton riding today. ‘Choc’ has ridden him twice previously and has won on both occasions. Choc is just getting back into the swing of things and has only had 6 rides in the last two weeks but has won once and also had a couple of placed efforts. He has a good strike rate at Exeter riding 12 winners from 59 runners over the last 5 seasons.
Cadoudalas is undoubtedly a better horse over fences, but does have some decent form over hurdles. He has to beat the very much in form Southway Star who has gone up 30lbs in her last four starts, but Cadoudalas has the able assistance of Choc Thornton and an 8lb pull in the weights over the mare. He also goes well over the trip and in the ground and looks a sound each way bet at current odds of 13/2.
